Here is everything you need to know about BMW maintenance.

BMW vehicles are renowned for their incredible performance, unmatched luxury and comfort. One of most recognized brand names in the world, they have always been on the forefront of innovation, from their legendary in-line 6 engines to their M performance cars that push the envelope when it comes to performance sedans. If you own a BMW, then consider yourself one of the lucky ones. But like all vehicles, it’s important for you to take care of your prized possession and below are 6 things you should keep an eye on during your ownership.

1. Follow your car service schedule religiously

While doing an oil change at every service interval is an absolute must, it is mandatory to follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule mentioned in the vehicle section in your iDrive system, which highlights all the things that need to be checked and/or replaced, from replacing your engine oil to checking your brake pads.

2. Oil matters. A lot.

This is pretty self-explanatory. The type of oil you use is very important. First thing is to consult your vehicle’s manual and see if it recommends the type of oil to be used. Example: 5W-30 full synthetic, 5W-40, etc. Using the right grade of oil is important for your engine as it helps lubricate the vehicle, eliminate impurities and keeps your engine running cooler. Regular oil change services will improve your car’s overall performance, fuel mileage and increase its lifespan.

Oil filters have to be replaced with each oil change service, as your oil picks up minute particles & contaminants and the filter keeps your oil clean and ensures the contaminants don’t keep circulating in your engine. There are several types of oil filters available, and it is important to use the recommended OEM filters to ensure your engine continues to run smoothly between each oil change.

3. All things related to tires

Tires are what connects your car to the road. It has a direct effect on your car’s performance, handling, comfort, braking, noise and fuel mileage. Most BMWs have the recommended tire size and tire pressure for the particular model on the door well and/or car manual.

It is important to install the correct tire size and set it to right tire pressure. The image below highlights the effects of having your tire over-inflated or under-inflated.

Almost all BMWs are fitted with Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) which informs you if your tire pressure has gone below manufacturer recommended pressure. So when you see this sign or any irregular or abnormal wear on tires, please make sure you visit one of our locations to get a free tire health check where we check your tire pressure and the condition of your tire.

To ensure longer life in your tires, ensure you rotate your tires at every service interval if possible. This depends on whether all four tires are the same or if they have staggered fitment. This ensures tire wear is even on your tires.

4. Wheel alignment

If you feel your car is swerving to one side when you are driving on a straight road, then you need to get your wheel alignment fixed.

Wheel alignment not only increases the life of your tire but is also important for your safety as it ensures your car responds and reacts the way it should.

5. Keep a check on your car fluids

Most drivers keep an eye on their engine oil and wiper fluid, but did you know your car has a lot of special fluids that ensure your vehicle is running smoothly. This includes but not limited to brake fluid, steering fluid, transmission fluid, coolant and more.

They all play a vital role and each of the fluids are specially designed for their respective function. The amount required for each varies as well so they need to get checked at each service interval to ensure there’s no leakage and the fluids don’t need to be replaced. The lifespan of each fluid is clearly mentioned in your service booklet.

Checking these fluids is not easy so ensure they are regularly checked by a technician.

6. Go to a trusted garage

The most important thing is to visit a garage you trust that has experience working on BMWs. Each vehicle manufacturer has its unique quirks and features and it’s important that they are experienced working on them and don’t use your vehicle as a guinea pig.

It is also important to know if the service center you choose uses genuine or non-genuine parts on your BMW. Genuine parts are designed by the manufacturer, so they are built specifically with the exact requirements for that particular model in mind, with no compromise on price or quality. Using non-genuine parts might be easier on the wallet but only temporarily, because they can potentially create other issues which will cost you a lot more in the long run. It’s best to stick with a specific garage as they will have a record of all the services and repairs that have been performed on your vehicle.
